About South Purdown
South Purdown is an ancient and beautiful green space in North Bristol. It is part of the Stapleton and Frome Valley conservation area and is designated as a site of Nature Conservation Interest and an important wildlife corridor. The area is known for its wildlife and flower meadow as well as its wide outlook over the city and is traversed by a number of public footpaths.
Historic significance
South Purdown was originally part of the Heath House estate which dates back to 1425. The estate was mainly used as agricultural land until the 1930s when the Cottrell Dormer family fell on hard times and were forced to sell off the land. The land was bought by the Bristol Corporation (Bristol City Council) in 1938 for use as public open space.
